Our Rich Heritage The Kamboj community is an ancient Indo-Aryan tribe with both Indian and Iranian affinities, as mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts and epigraphy. Our ancestors were the modern representatives of the ancient Kambojas, a well-known Kshatriya tribe that played a significant role in the history of the Indian subcontinent. According to historical records, the Kambojas were first mentioned in the Mahabharata and contemporary Vedanga literature, roughly from the 5th century BCE. They were recognized as one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas (great kingdoms) during the lifetime of Buddha, with their kingdom located in regions on both sides of the Hindukush. Historical Significance The Kambojas were renowned for their skill in horse breeding, and their horses were considered the most suitable for battle. They were also adherents of Zoroastrianism and had their own unique linguistic and cultural traditions. The ancient Kamboja kingdom was strategically located in the northwestern regions, encompassing areas of present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. In modern times, the Kamboj community has spread across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and various other regions. They have maintained their reputation as skilled agriculturists, with numerous awards and recognition for progressive farming.
